the only intrusive change in this new sysvinit release is the move of the control FIFO from /dev/initctl (version 2.88) to /run/initctl (version 2.89). After update it's not possible to talk to the running init daemon. Adding a sysmlink between the two locations doesn't work, because the symlink would overwrite the real FIFO at /run/initctl upon another install of 2.89. The best way to solve this issue is to restart the system after update by running /etc/rc.shutdown
