To use vnstat, you need to add the following line to root's crontab:

0-55/5 * * * *  /usr/bin/vnstat -u

After that you need to introduce to vnstat every network interface you
want to monitor:

vnstat -u -i eth0
vnstat -u -i eth1
etc.
